Charles Dickens Autograph on Bank Cheque

For Sale: £2,250.00

English author Charles Dickens (1812-1870) is widely considered to be one of the greatest writers from the Victorian era and his works are still highly popular today.

Many of Dickens' works were published serially in magazines, and many chapters in his books end with cliffhangers which were originally intended to encourage the reader to pick up the next instalment.

This is a Coutts bank cheque dated 'Twenty Seventh June, 1861' in Charles Dickens' handwriting. This is just 2 months before the final instalment of Great Expectations was first published in All the Year Round magazine. The cheque, which measures 7.15" x 3.1", features some archive folds as is typical of documents from this time. It is otherwise in excellent condition.

Dickens has made the cheque for 'Twelve Pounds Ten Shillings' payable to H.P.N. Trust.

He has added his autograph, 'Charles Dickens', to the bottom right of the cheque, next to the amount in figures '12.10.0'. Both the autograph and handwriting are clear in bold blue ink.
