Charles Dickens Signed Handwritten Note
For Sale: £3,500.00
Charles Dickens (1812-1870) is widely considered to be the greatest
novelist of the Victorian period. His most popular works include The Adventures of Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield and Great Expectations.
Many
of Dickens' works were published serially, either as monthly or weekly
instalments in magazines. Instead of writing the whole novel first,
Dickens would often create instalments as they were being published.
Charles Dickens' works remain popular today and many of his novels have been adapted for the stage and screen.
This
is a Charles Dickens handwritten note from to Philip H. Howard. The
note features Charles Dickens' address "1 Devonshire Terrace" at the top
and is dated "Third March, 1851".
The note reads as follows:
"Dear Sir,
Allow
me to thank you for your obliging letter and to express my regret that
you were not present at the dinner, and that I was not at home when you
did me the favour to call. Faithfully Yours".
Dickens has added his autograph at the end of the letter.
The
letter has some archive folds and there is some smudging to the ink in
lower half of the note and the signature that is likely to have occurred
when Dickens himself was writing the note.
The note measures 4" x 6". It is framed with a photograph of Dickens measuring an overall size of 18" x 13.5".
Dickens'
works have remained popular to this day. Many items bearing his
signature have, unsurprisingly, not survived the 140+ years since his
death.
This letter provides a rare opportunity to own a wonderful example of Dickens' autograph. It is in fine condition.
