EH Shepard Autographed Drawing of Winnie the Pooh
For Sale: £25,000.00
Ernest Howard Shepard (better known as E.H. Shepard) is the illustrator who bought the children's books Winnie the Pooh and The Wind in The Willows to life.
Shepard was recommended to Winnie the Pooh author A.A. Milne by a colleague whom he worked with at Punch Magazine. At first, Milne was not keen on Shepard's style for Winnie the Pooh. Milne was finally persuaded to allow Shepard to illustrate his book of poems When We Were Very Young and was delighted with the result. Only then was Shepard appointed to illustrate Winnie the Pooh.
Shepard spent much of his career working on political cartoons for Punch Magazine and in his later years he resented the fact that he was most famous for drawing (in his own words) "that silly old bear".
This beautiful drawing depicting Winnie the Pooh carrying his trademark honey pot measures 4" x 3".
Shepard has sketched the bear in pencil first and outlined it with black ballpoint ink. He has signed "Ernest Shepard, 9/1/70" in black ink beneath his sketch.
Drawings of Pooh bear by E.H. Shepard are extremely popular with collectors and nostalgia investors alike. This is reflected in the prices these sketches fetch at auction.
One pencil drawing, showing Pooh, Tigger and Piglet sitting around a table sold at auction for £31,000 in 2008.
That same year, a Sothebys auction of drawings by the famous illustrator raised over £1.2 million in total. The top lot, a drawing called "He went on tracking, and Piglet . . . ran after him," sold for £115,250.
At the time Sotheby's commented, "The interest from around the world in these superb drawings, and the highly competitive bidding from many buyers, has demonstrated the world-wide appeal of Winnie the Pooh."
This is a very rare chance to own a beautiful, signed drawing of E.H. Shepard's best loved creation.
