Fidel Castro & Che Guevara Signed Pre-Revolution Cuban Flag

This Cuban flag measuring 23" x 12½" features handwritten inscriptions and signatures from Fidel Castro and Che Guevara. The flag is framed to an overall size of 27¾" x 17½".

The upper white stripe of the flag features a handwritten inscription from Castro in Spanish reading "We will not let anybody impede the triumph that is coming". Castro's signature appears beneath the inscription.

In the lower white stripe Che Guevara has written "We will only stop this fight when our flag waves free and sovereign" in Spanish, signing 'Che' below.

It is clear from the inscriptions that the flag was inscribed by the two rebel leaders in the days prior to the Cuban Revolution.

Intriguingly, the flag is very similar in size and design (including the brass eyelets) to that flown by The Granma, the boat used to transport Castro, Guevara and 80 other fighters of the Cuban Revolution from Mexico to Cuba in 1956 to overthrow the regime of Fulgencio Batista. The Granma set sail from Tuspan, Mexico on 25 November 1956 and arrived on the Playa Las Coloradas, Municipality of Niquero, Cuba on 2nd December.

Since 1976, the Granma has been on permanent display in a glass enclosure at the Granma Memorial adjacent to the Museum of the Revolution in Havana.

(The exact origin of the flag is worthy of further research as it could add significantly to the value)

Fidel Castro and Che Guevara were two of the most influential figures in the Cuban Revolution of 1953-1959.

Che Guevara has since become an icon of the Cuban Revolution and today his image is used to represent revolution and rebellion. The 2004 film based on Guevara's diaries, and the use of his image in popular culture, has made a whole new generation aware of his life.

Memorabilia related to Guevara is highly sought after and this is reflected in high prices at recent auctions. In 2007 a lock of Guevara's hair sold for $119,000 making it the most expensive lock of hair to ever sell at auction.

Fidel Castro memorabilia is also becoming increasingly popular. According to the PFC40 autograph index, a signed photo of Castro has increased in value by over 800% in the last eleven years.

Items relating to this period of Cuban history rarely appear on the market.

We have only handled one Che Guevara signed photo in the last 10 years.

As far as we are aware not a single item signed by both Fidel Castro and Che Guevara has appeared on the market at any point in the last 35 years.

To find both signatures, and their handwritten pre-revolutionary quotes, on such a historic piece is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

We believe this flag to be the finest piece of Cuban memorabilia in existence - a true Museum quality item.
