John Coltrane Musical Manuscript
For Sale: £1,200.00
Master jazz improviser and prolific recording artist, John Coltrane
(1926-1967), was one of the greatest American saxophonists of the 20th
Century. He played tenor, soprano and alto saxophone in a variety of
styles, from bebop, to avant-garde and free jazz. 'Trane' also worked
with Miles Davies and Thelonious Monk, and helped pioneer the use of
modes in jazz.
Later in life, his musical compositions took
inspiration from his growing spirituality. Of his faith and its link to
his music, he is quoted as saying:
My goal is to live the
truly religious life, and express it in my music. If you live it, when
you play there's no problem because the music is part of the whole
thing. To be a musician is really something. It goes very, very deep. My
music is the spiritual expression of what I am - my faith, my
knowledge, my being.
This
exceptional, original unsigned manuscript measures 9.5" x 8.5", with 41
measures written in green and blue ink by Coltrane. Handwritten note
notations are made above each measure, moving from major to minor
chords.
The
reverse features a copyright ink stamp from Coltrane's estate '2005
Jowcol Music'. Some scattered creasing, light soiling and wrinkling, and
paper loss to the edges, most noticeable along the bottom section. A
rare and exciting piece.
