A Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory application form signed by Richard Nixon (1913-1994) in 1938.

The Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory provides background information and reviews on United States lawyers and law firms for both consumers and professionals. Before electronic communications became commonplace, lawyers would submit paper forms with their details to be included in the directory.

This form is personally filled in by Richard Nixon with information to be added to his listing in the Law Directory. Nixon has filled in the form by hand in black ink with information including his address, date and place of birth and education. The form is dated “Oct 22, 1938”.

After graduating from Duke University School of Law, Nixon had hoped to join the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He never received a response to his application for the position though he learned much later that he had in fact been hired but his appointment was cancelled at the last minute as a result of budget cuts. He was admitted to the State Bar of California in 1937 and began practising law with Wingert and Bewley in Whittier. Later on in life, Nixon was very proud that he was the only modern president to have previously worked as a practicing attorney.
