Dali's Elephant de triomphe valued at $570,000

Elephant de triomphe, a sculpture by Salvador Dali, could make £250,000-350,000 ($410,000-570,000) at Bonhams' Impressionist and Modern Art sale in London on February 4.

Numbered four of eight, the bronze sculpture was designed in 1975 - with the first example produced in 1984.

Elephants feature as a motif throughout Dali's work, and are interpreted as a metaphor for the future. Often they stand on spindly legs, which heighten the concept of the fragility of progress.

The golden trumpeter that stands atop the elephant issues a fanfare for the new age.

The record price at auction for a piece of work by Dali was set at £13.4m ($21.5m), by a painting of the French surrealist poet Paul Eluard, at Sotheby's London in 2011.

Work by Dali performed well at auction last year, with an illustrated copy of Les Chants Del Moldorer making $105,000 in October.

A brooch known as the Eye of Time made £96,000 ($145,450) in August - an increase of 700% on its estimate.

Also featuring in the sale is a painting by Joan Miro titled Femme, etoile, which carries an estimate of £180,000-220,000 ($300,000-360,000).

Dating to 1978, the work displays the influence of abstract expressionism - demonstrating a clear break with Miro's ealier emphasis on order and repetition.

The auction will take place on the same day as Sotheby's sale of Impressionist and Modern Art in New York, which will feature works by Picasso and Juan Gris.
