Damien Hirst's Biphenyl C could achieve $193,500 in Hong Kong

Damien Hirst's Biphenyl C is set to make $128,934-193,402 in Sotheby's Boundless: Contemporary Art auction in Hong Kong on January 20.

The painting dates to 1995 and is one of the major series of "spot" paintings Hirst produced that are named after various chemicals.

Damien Hirst is one of the world's most valuable living artists

Rows of identically spaced spots of varying colours are arrayed on the canvas. The majority are produced by Hirst's assistants and are rigorously quality controlled to create a machinelike effect.

Hirst explained: "Mathematically, with the spot paintings, I probably discovered the most fundamentally important thing in any kind of art. Which is the harmony of where colour can exist on its own, interacting with other colours in a perfect format."

We have this original Damien Hirst sketch available.

A Cake Stool by Brazilian artists and designers Fernando and Humberto Campana is valued at $19,340-25,786.

The piece dates to 2008, although they began the series in 2002 with a work titled Panda Banquete. It was inspired by the interior of an arcade grabber machine.

Another example sold for $31,250 at Phillips New York last year.
