Klimt's Kirche in Cassone could sell for £18m

Kirche in Cassone (Church in Cassone - landscape with Cypresses) is one of Gustav Klimt's most highly-regarded works, and it is now coming up for sale at Sotheby's.

Created in 1913, it presents an excellent example of Klimt's innovative techniques in the execution of the roofs and foliage, capturing the shimmering colours created by the bright sunlight scattering over them and the lake below.

The lake in question is Lake Garda, at which the village of Cassone is located. Klimt stayed there during 1913, and this is one of two paintings of the lake he painted, but sadly Malcesine am  Gardasee has since been destroyed, so this is the only depiction of Lake and local architecture by Klimt still in existence.

The work is expected to sell for £12-18m ahead of Cézanne's still life Pichet et Fruits sur une Table at Sotheby's auction, which takes place on February 3 in London. Sotheby's is also holding a sale of Old Master paintings on January 28.
