Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry's memorabilia goes under the hammer

In Star Trek, Gene Roddenberry created one of the first, best known and most celebrated sci-fi series ever. His legacy is well-established and makes collectibles associated with the man covetable in themselves regardless of explicit Star Trek links or intrinsic value.

As we've reported before, his Apple Mac (admittedly an early one counting as an antique) sold for $8,900 in 2009. But several of the items from his estate appearing in an auction this weekend are expected to sell for more.

The most valuable Star Trek related gear is most the cast-signed posters. There are three available: two from Star Trek, Generations, showing both Kirk and Picard, the other being for the film Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country Poster.

The latter is the most valuable as it is signed by seven members of the cast: William Shatner (Kirk), Nichelle Nichols (Commander Uhura), George Takei (Sulu), Walter Koenig (Chekov), Leonard Nimoy (Spock), James Doohan (Scotty), and DeForest Kelley (McCoy).

It is expected to bring up to $10,000, but this isn't the most valuable item by any means. There are works of art and antiques worth considerably more from the Roddenberry estate.

A Bill Mack sculpture made from bonded sand entitled simply Enigma presents a female nude hunched over and trapped within a box. This has been given a broad estimate of $5,000-50,000.

For Asian antique collectors there is an even more valuable item available - indeed probably the most spectacular item in the whole sale: an Asian 22k gold belt with dragon etchings. Weighing an impressive 8.34 troy ounces of solid gold, the unique belt is expected to sell for $20,000-100,000.

The sale takes place in California on February 4. Collectors more interested in the other great sci-fi epic Star Wars will be interested to know that we have props from the original film available for sale right now.
