Kennedy letter war

JFK served on Patrol Torpedo boats during the second world war

It's one of very few surviving documents from JFK's time in the second world war, when he served on Patrol Torpedo (PT) boats.

It dates to a year after Kennedy's boat was cut in half by a Japanese destroyer in the South Pacific.

Kennedy survived but two of his crew were killed. He famously swam to shore, dragging his injured machinist to safety with his teeth.

After the incident he took command of another vessel. He also spent around three months training in Miami, between March and May 1944, when he wrote the letter.

The letter reads in full: "Mr. Galline, Thank you for your kindness in sending the travel books and for the Easter card. Your Thoughtfulness is greatly appreciated.

"Sincerely, Yours, John F. Kennedy".

An autograph album, featuring a signed photograph by Orville Wright, is valued at $5,000-7,000.

The photograph shows the Wright Brothers' first successful flight and is inscribed: "To Gerard Heppelthwaite my first flight Orville Wright".

Other notable people featured in the collection include Sherlock Holmes author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and comedian George Formby.

We have this handwritten list by Arthur Conan Doyle for sale.
