Rare Oliver Cromwell autograph achieves £5.8k

International Autograph Auctions completed a sale at the weekend near Heathrow, London.

Amongst the best lots sold was one signed by a previous ruler of Great Britain, though not a king: Oliver Cromwell. The piece of oblong vellum was signed Oliver P, noting his role as Lord Protector. (A king might have added 'R' for Rex.)

The neatly written document includes:

"To the Commissioners authorized by a late Ordinance for Approbation of Public Preachers or any officer of them, Greeting.

"We present Mr. Richard Franklyn to the Rectory of Brumham in the County of Wiltshire void by the death of Mr Richards the last incumbent there and to Our Presentation devolved by lapse, to the end he may be approved of by them and admitted thereunto with all its rights members and appurtenances...."

Expected to bring £4,000-5,000, the document somewhat exceeded this due to keen bidding, being taken home for £5,800.

Cromwell's signature is quite rare and documents displaying it may be regarded as an investment. Another is currently available on the market.
