'White Horse' FA Cup Final shirt to auction for $16,000

A football shirt worn by Bolton Wanderers' Billy Jennings in the "White Horse" 1923 FA Cup Final is to star in Dreweatts & Bloomsbury Auctions' Autographs, Documents and Historic Sporting Memorabilia sale on September 25 in London.

The final is so named for the white police horse that cleared the massed crowds from the pitch at Wembley - the first time the final was played at the stadium.

Jennings was on the winning side in both the 1923 and 1926 FA Cup Finals

The Wanderers shirt, valued at £6,000-10,000 ($9,969-16,165), leads a selection of Jennings' career memorabilia, including his FA Cup winner's medal from 1926 and his 1914 Wales international shirt, valued at £3,000-5,000 ($4,849-8,082) and £1,500-2,000 ($2,242-4,041), respectively.

Jennings (1893-1968) played over 250 matches for Bolton Wanderers, as well as appearing 11 times for the Welsh national team. He was later made manager of Cardiff City, where he spent two years.

Elsewhere in the sale is a Charlotte Bronte signed letter, which is valued at £5,000-6,000 ($8,082-9,969), and is addressed to her lifelong friend and correspondent Ellen Nussey.

Nussey received more than 500 letters from Bronte during her lifetime and was a major contributor to the 1857 biography The Life of Charlotte Bronte.

A signed photograph of Albert Einstein is valued at £3,000-5,000 ($4,849-8,082), with an inscription in German that reads, "Kind regards for the warm letter".

One of the highlights of the sale is a collection of almost 150 autograph letters, notes and envelopes by Miss Caroline Whitehead, who wrote to Victorian era celebrities to enquire if they would give a talk at one of the societies she represented.

Featuring King George III, the Duke of Wellington, Alfred Tennyson, Ralph Waldo Emerson and Florence Nightingale, among others, it is valued at £2,000-3,000 ($4,041-4,849).

Many were asked to speak on behalf of the Pioneer Club, which was established in 1892 as a place where women could discuss issues such as theosophy, anti-vivisection, anti-vaccination and feminism.
