Winston Churchill (1874-1965) autographed letter on official Chartwell note paper (PF78)

Dated November 25 1948 this typed letter is on 'Chartwell' headed paper, the country home of the Churchill family.

In the letter Churchill thanks Mr Willy Sax for a 'beautiful box which will exactly suit my needs

"whether going abroad or painting in the studio. I am most grateful to you for your kindness"

Churchill signs off with a clear signature to the centre of the page.

Willy Sax was a paint manufacturer. Over a period of 18 years, Churchill corresponded with Sax about painting supplies and the technical aspects of painting materials.

His friendship with Churchill was recorded in a book written by him, 'Farben fur Churchills Leinwand', published posthumously in 1995.

Churchill first put paint to canvas in 1915 and even won an anonymous amateur art exhibition in London.

He once wrote "When I get to heaven I mean to spend a considerable portion of my first million years in painting, and so get to the bottom of the subject."

The letter has the usual archive folds associated with such pieces, however these are clear of the signature which is immaculate.

A lovely memento of the Churchill era.
