1953 Ferrari 375 MM Spider to see stellar results at Monterey auction

A specially commissioned example of the extremely rare 1953 Ferrari 375 MM Spider will be offered at RM Auctions' flagship Monterey auction as part of the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.

Taking place on August 16-17, RM Auctions has consigned 25 cars that are expected to sell for more than $1m+ each. The Ferrari 375 MM Spider's estimate is only available on request - a sure sign that it will be among the top selling lots of the event.

Also starring in the sale will be one of the legendary Ferrari 275 GTB/4 N.A.R.T Spyders, which is set to break records in an effort to raise money for charity. It is joined by a fantastic 1928 Mercedes-Benz 680S Torpedo Roadster.

The 375 MM was commissioned from new by Jim Kimberly, heir to the Kimberly-Clark business empire.

Featuring coachwork by Pinin Farina, it is the only example known to have pontoon fenders, as well as being the only example sporting the unique colour known as Kimberly Red, which Kimberly blended himself in collaboration with his friend Harley Earl, who later became head of design and vice president of General Motors.

The stunning Ferrari also has a superb racing heritage, having been campaigned extensively by Kimberly, particularly in 1954, when it won almost every race of the season, including the SCCA National Championship.

"It is a rare occasion unto itself to offer a 375 MM at auction, and this particular occasion is made all the more special by the fact that we have been entrusted to offer the car by the man who bought it in 1968, and whose family has been involved with the car for nearly half a century", explained Rob Myers, chairman and founder of RM Auctions.

"Chuck Weiss is a brilliant engineer and privateer racer in his own right, and we can't imagine the car having been in a better home for the last 45 years."

Weiss was the former Ford suspension and handling engineer, who completed an exceptional restoration for the Meadow Brook Concours in 1989.

Paul Fraser Collectibles brings you all the latest news on classic car collecting. We also have a fantastic selection of racing memorabilia for sale, including signed items from Formula 1's biggest stars.
