1956 Maserati 250F offered at $6m in Pebble Beach auction

As the historic classics come thick and fast at Pebble Beach, Gooding & Company will offer the 1956 Maserati 250F driven by Stirling Moss in the Italian Grand Prix.

Only two 'offset' models of the 250F were ever built - this is one of them

The official auctioneer for the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance (August 16-17), Gooding & Company has a superb line-up of the world's best collector cars for sale, with the Maserati among the finest at $6m-8m.

The Maserati 250F was designed to race in the 2.5-litre Formula One, and saw success in its first season at the hands of the legendary Juan Manual Fangio. The marque was one of the first to produce cars specifically for Formula One racing, and continued to use and improve the 250F until 1957.

In the 1956 season, Stirling Moss won in both the Monaco and Italian Grand Prix in the only two "offset" models ever made, in which the engine was angled in the chassis by five degrees, allowing the driver to sit eight inches lower, next to the driveshaft.

Having seen a strong private racing career following its service with the works team, the Maserati has since been owned by some of the top collectors of Italian competition cars, and is considered one of the finest single-seaters extant.
