$756,000 Bentley classic ignites RM's 'Quintessentially English' summe

Cars manufactured by some of the biggest names in the business fired on all cylinders to make RM Auctions' sale last Thursday, June 23, a roaring success.

The extravaganza, which was held in West London and was suitably called the Quintessentially English summer sale, featured vehicles made by the likes of Aston Martin, Rolls-Royce, Jaguar and Lagonda.

However, as is often the case at classic car sales, the show was stolen by a brilliant Bentley. This time it was the 1929 speed six 'Le Mans' style Tourer, which sold for a monumental $755,745.

With a reputation for being nimble and manoeuvrable and offering great power-to-weight ratios, they quickly became a big favourite on the racing scene.

During the late 1920s and early 1930s, the new speed six models dominated the touring circuit and the famous 24-hour races at Le Mans in North West France. They built up a fearsome status as the undoubted best car of its type anywhere in the world.

With this kind of history to it, it is clear why these classics are valued so highly and sell for so much. As they age further and become more limited, their worth and investment potential will increase even more.

Not far behind it however was a car produced by an equally respected manufacturer, Aston Martin. Arguably a prettier vehicle than the Bentley, with its trademark elegant design and luxurious interior, the DB4 Vantage Convertible sold for $692,766.

With Aston Martin being famed for its DB series of cars which were most successful during the 1950s and 1960s, this model was always going to attract a lot of attention because of its pedigree.

Unveiled at the London Motor Show in 1958, it immediately set a new benchmark for design standards which have stood the test of time.

This new car also came with an engine produced by respected Polish-born engineer Tadek Marek. It is testament to the brilliance of its designers and makers that it still looks as good today as it did back then.

Of course, no auction of English greats would be complete without starring a Rolls-Royce. Luckily this one was no different, as it included the amazing looking 1926 Phantom I Experimental Sports Tourer.

There can be few cars made which are more eye-catching than this, and its unique nature and quality meant it rode away for a price $629,787.
