Classic 1980 Crossle 42S 'Historic Sports 2000' racing car auctions in UK sale

We've already reported on the upcoming sale of a modern classic Radical SR8 racer in the UK on February 18 - a rare car with 'the best gear change outside of F1'.

But if you're a collector who fancies bidding on an older classic racer, then how about this beauty: the 1980 Crosslé 42S Sports 2000?

After being founded by John and Rosemary Crosslé in 1957, the Crosslé Car Company went on to establish itself as a top builder of high-quality racing cars in the post-war era.

Attention to detail and value for money were the name of the game at Crosslé, as was good design and strong construction. The company rapidly expanded to become a world-renowned marque.

It first enjoyed success in the 1172cc Ford Specials, and later became a world leader when the Formula Ford 1600 and 2000 classes were formed, winning races in both Europe and America.

The Crosslé Car Company's Formula Fords were always the choice for young hopefuls at racing schools, thanks to their strength and quality of construction.

Nigel Mansell, Johnny Dumfries and John Watson were each among those who had their first racing experiences in a Crosslé Formula Ford.

This classic 1980 Crosslé 42S Historic Sports 2000 car was fully restored from the ground up by the Crosslé factory in 2007. It is in race ready condition with a fresh engine.

According to the UK auctioneer, the car has only been used "about ten times" since 2007. A spare set of wheels and spare parts, including suspension components, gear ratios, and its full FIA Historic Papers are included in the car's sale.

As you can see from the photographs, the car is painted in striking Gulf livery. Its racing record is equally striking, including wins and podiums at Historic Sports 2000 races in the UK and Germany.

This classic automobile's drive also belies its roots as a racing school car, being very driver-friendly and "ideal for track days."

The Crosslé 42S is auctioning with a £22,000-£28,000 pre-sale estimate. If you're the lucky winning bidder, you will even get maintenance back-up from the Crosslé factory.

And you could own this car just in time for the first Historic Sports 2000 race of the 2012 season, held at Silverstone in April.
