Saturday September 11 2010, saw yet another world record price in the world of classic car collecting. Collectors from across the globe gathered at Bonhams' Weekend de l'Excellence Automobile which was held at the famous Grand Prix circuit of Reims-Gueux in France.
They were not to be disappointed either, as a mint condition 1965 Aston Martin DB5 Vantage rolled up for sale. The car was one of only seventeen left hand drives made and featured a manual 5 speed transmission.
The model is perhaps most recognisable to fans and collectors alike, as James Bond's car in the 1964 classic Goldfinger. This particular example was made all the more appealing given the fact that it had only two previous owners.

Carrying a pre-sale estimate of £248,000 - 331,000 ($380,850 - 508,310), the piece sold for £342,600 ($526,120) in what is a world record price for a sale of its kind.
Another Aston Marton, the DBS vantage 1968, which featured in the 1969 James Bond film On her Majesty's Secret Service also sold for £85,125 ($130,725) in what was a good day for the classic car brand.
A 1995 Aston Martin Vantage sold for a similarly impressive £76,035 ($116,765). Whilst a 1986 Aston Martin Volante which had once been ranked the world's fastest convertible, fetched £61,780 ($94,874) at the sale.
Following the sale, Philip Kantor, the European head of cars at Bonhams commented:
"We are delighted with the enthusiasm of the packed sale room in Reims Gueux at this historic venue and clearly the results reflect the continuing "bullish" collectors' car market for prime examples of rare models of great marques"
Other highlights of the auction included the sale of a 1967 Lamborghini 400GT which sold for a massive £160,750 ($246,870) and a well conditioned Ford GT Coupe which brought £76,035 ($116,765) at the sale.
Overall the success of last weekend's auction, bodes well for the classic car market as a whole, which has seen numerous world record prices set over the past few months.
