Paul Newman's 1979 Porsche 935 to auction at Gooding & Co

The 1979 Porsche 935 Paul Newman famously raced to second place in the 24 Hours of Le Mans is to auction at Gooding & Co.

Newman, along with teammates Dick Barbour and Rolf Stommelen, put in an exceptional shift - especially considering this was his debut at the race.

The car, chassis 009 0030, was lovingly restored to its former glory in 1979 and was awarded best in class at the 2007 Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance.

As an interesting aside, nascent tech giant Apple sponsored the car's 1980 campaign- marking the first and last time the company has ever sponsored a racing car.

It's expected to make around $4.5m-5.5m in the August 20-21 Pebble Beach sale.

The historic 935 is one of several Porsches offered in the sale.

Another is a 1984 Porsche 911 SC/RS, which is valued at $1.4m-1.8m.

The rally car was designed especially for the Middle East Championship. It was driven by the Qatari racing driver Saeed Al-Hajri, known as The King of the Dunes.

Auction house founder David Gooding said: "We have seen significant interest in the Porsche market, especially for competition and limited production vehicles.

"We are presenting examples that embody a connoisseur's quest for exceptional provenance and distinction with these remarkable Porsches."
