Pierce-Arrow Silver Arrow to make $3m?

RM Sotheby’s will offer the first Pierce-Arrow Silver Arrow ever built at its Hershey Sale on October 6.

Pierce-Arrow operated out of Buffalo, New York between 1901 and 1938.

Pierce Silver Arrow

Only five Pierce-Arrow Silver Arrows were built

While it produced a variety of models across a range of price brackets, the Silver Arrow is its best known creation.

The car, estimated at $2m-3m, is a concept, one of only five ever produced. It made its first appearance at the 1933 New York World’s Fair, where it wowed the crowds with its sleek, art-moderne lines.

The futuristic styling extended to the mechanics, with an automatic clutch and power breaks offering a luxurious drive.

After an appearance at the Chicago World’s Fair that same year the car was sold on to an MC Hudson, a distributor for mineral water company Crazy Water.

Over the years it’s passed through some big collections. The car most recently belonged to collector Thomas F Derro, who died last year.

"Not merely an automobile, the Derro Silver Arrow could be considered an Art Moderne monument and a symbol of the streamlined age at its finest and most audacious," the auction house said.

"Treasured and shown for over two decades but never for sale, it is now offered today with considerable pride as what it has always been, first and foremost: a showstopper."
