1793 US half cent to exceed $15,000 at Heritage Auctions?

A 1793 US half cent is to lead a sale of rare coins at Heritage Auctions in Orlando on July 10-13, with bidding to open at $15,000.

The half cent liberty cap is a classic early American issue that is highly sought after by collectors, as the copper coins were the first to be produced at the fledgling US Mint.

Around 35,000 were produced, with the design remaining in use until it was replaced by the draped bust variation in 1796. Lettering around the edge reads "Two hundred for a dollar".

Earlier this week a 1796 10c in exemplary condition sold for $881,250 at Heritage.

An 1861-D gold dollar, struck in Dahlonega, Georgia under the confederacy, is estimated to make in excess of $14,000.

The town mint was captured by confederate forces in the early days of the civil war and used to produce a number of gold dollars and half dollars, very few of which have survived.

As the men operating the press were not experts, the majority of the coins are weakly struck, although the rarity and back-story of the issue ensures it remains a favourite with collectors.
