1940s weapons discovered in Israel

A weapons cache believed to date back to before the establishment of modern Israel has been dug-up by archaeologists.

The weapons were wrapped in oiled cloth and stashed inside the inner tube of a tire, according to Dror Barshad of the Israel Antiquities Association.

The weapons are believed to have been used by Arabs in riots leading up to the establishment of the state of Israel in 1948, according to Israel's Maariv newspaper.

The rusty weapons have reportedly been identified as four submachine guns with Port Said stamped in Arabic on them and 50 rounds of ammunition, all manufactured in Egypt.

Police explosives experts collected the weapons before permitting archaeologists to continue excavating at the site, on which a main road is planned to be built.

The guns may have been taken by Israeli soldiers during the Sinai Campaign in 1956, weapons expert Eitan Felman told the Haartetz newspaper.
