He defeated 40,000 men in 40 minutes

A superb new item has just arrived in the office.

And the timing couldn't be better.

Because today in 1812, the man who wrote it became a legend.

On a dusty battlefield in Spain, the Duke of Wellington proved his bravery and tactical brilliance to the world.

The Battle of Salamanca was a military masterpiece.

It was a bold, decisive victory. Napoleon's army was routed.

As the legend goes, Wellington defeated 40,000 men in 40 minutes.

And the Iron Duke took a major stride towards victory over his nemesis.

So all in all, not a bad day's work.

The Duke of Wellington: a name that resounds throughout British history.

Arthur Wellesley (1769 – 1852). The 1st Duke of Wellington.

The man who defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

A man who twice led the nation as Prime Minister.

He's one of the finest historic English autographs you can own.

Queen Victoria called him "the greatest man this country ever produced".

As a national hero he stands with Admiral Nelson and Winston Churchill.

Great men whose bravery and fortitude saved their nation.

So if those two iconic names sit proudly in your collection...

The Duke of Wellington should be the next on your list.

And here's the perfect piece.

A rare letter handwritten and signed by the Duke, and beautifully preserved for over 180 years.

This is a rare letter handwritten and signed by Wellington in December 1840.

The letter was sent from Stratfield Saye House, the stately home gifted to him by the grateful nation in 1817.

It's addressed to the "Earl of Lindsay", a member of the House of Lords.

Wellington writes as the Conservative Leader of the House, concerning a political proclamation by the Queen.

(You can find a full description of the letter here.)

And his signature is a very fine example indeed.

The Duke of Wellington leads his men to victory at the Battle of Salamanca in 1812.

That's how the poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson described Wellington.

And today he's remembered as one of the most important military and political figures of the 19th century.

He was a tactical genius and a veteran of 60 battles, whose ideas are still studied in military academies to this day.

When he sent this letter in 1840, Wellington was the Conservative Leader of the House of Lords - and a canny political operator.

He out-manouvered his opponents through constant correspondence with key figures in the House.

The pen became his sword.

And the letters he sent were his soldiers.

Including the one I'm offering you right now.
