Sioux quilled war shirt leads the charge in Old West auction

A quilled hide war shirt worn by a Native American Sioux warrior will see some of the top bids in Brian Lebel's 24th Annual Old West Auction, which takes place in Denver on June 22.

Sioux Quilled Hide war shirt
War shirts such as this are popular among Native American collectors, especially those garments traceable to famous warriors

The shirt is valued at $20,000-30,000, decorated with striking quillwork strips of pink, purple, yellow and green.

For collectors of Native American artefacts, Paul Fraser Collectibles is offering an authentic strand of hair from Geronimo, the legendary Apache leader.

Also starring in the sale is the Ned and Jody Martin Texas Bit Collection, a one-of-a-kind offering that was used by the Martins for their landmark book, Bit and Spur Makers in the Texas Tradition (2002).

With some of the finest horse bits from early masters offered, the collection would be almost impossible to compile today, warranting an estimate of $180,000-220,000.
