Hitler was a failed artist

Sale of works by the fascist dictator have attracted much criticism, particularly in Germany, but still occasionally take place.

Hitler famously failed to get in to the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts due to a lack of talent and instead went on to become one of history's greatest monsters.

As art historian Birgit Schwarz explained to German newspaper Der Spiegel in 2009: "His love of art led directly into the heart of evil.

"His fanatical pursuit of his own cause, and his self-image as a genius, contributed to his powers of persuasion and, therefore, his success."
