Easter Rising surrender order valued at $128,500

An original Order of Surrender from the 1916 Easter Rising is valued at £80,000-100,000 ($102,824-128,530).

This was the document that officially ended the Irish rebellion on April 29, 1916, five days after it began.

Irish Republic surrender

Patrick Pearse was a leader of the Irish republican movement

It commands all rebels to lay down their arms, in the hope of avoiding any more bloodshed, and was signed by Patrick Pearse - one of the chief orchestrators of the Rising.

Pearse penned much of the famous Proclamation of the Irish Republic and read it out from the steps of the General Post Office in Dublin.

The other rebels voted him president of the republic, a title he held for a few short days.

He was executed by firing squad a few days later, along with 15 other leaders.

However, this was not the end for the dream of an independent Ireland.

Political pressure led to the election of Sinn Fein in 1918.

The Irish War of Independence followed in 1919. In 1921 Britain finally recognised Ireland as a free state.

The lot is one of only a handful of surviving orders of surrender and will auction at Bonhams London on June 14.

Kieran O’Boyle, a manuscript expert at Bonhams, said: “It is difficult to overstate the importance of this document to the history of Ireland.

“While in the short term, the surrender represented failure, the public reaction to the rising and in particular to the harsh way in which it was suppressed, galvanised the movement for independence and gave it the wide popular support it had previously lacked.”
