In Cold Blood guitars to sell at Guernsey's

A pair of guitars linked to Truman Capote's In Cold Blood will be sold as a single lot at Guernsey's on February 27.

It consists of one used by actor Robert Blake in the 1967 film adaptation of the book and another belonging to the real life killer Perry Smith.

Perry Smith's guitar is mentioned a number of times in Capote's In Cold Blood

The film used version is a 1966 Gibson LG-1, treated with a sunburst finish to stop it reflecting light on set.

Smith's actual guitar is a Gibson-made budget brand (possibly Henry L Mason or Kalamazoo) produced during the 1940s or 1950s.

The lot is expected to sell for around $125,000-175,000.

Guernsey's comments: "The In Cold Blood pair of guitars in the auction must constitute one of the most unusual musical offerings ever: those who vividly recall the legendary Truman Capote book and movie will remember that Perry Smith, the muchanalyzed killer, toted his guitar everywhere."

In Cold Blood relates the true story of the murder of a family of four in Kansas by two recently released prisoners, Perry Smith and Richard Hickok.

Capote travelled to the town of Holcomb, where the killings took place, along with his friend - the author Harper Lee.

His ground-breaking analysis of the crime proved a sensation on its publication in 1966. You can take a look at all our memorabilia for sale by clicking here.
