Mahatma Gandhi typed and signed letter

On this day in 1948...

At precisely 5.17pm in central New Delhi...

Four gunshots echoed across a garden of prayer.

There was blood. Smoke. Chaos.

Panic turned to anguish.

And in a moment of violence, a great soul was lost to the world.

A legacy for the ages.

Gandhi's tragic death on this day in 1948 was a loss felt on a global scale.

Gandhi's tragic death on this day in 1948 was a loss felt on a global scale.

The assassination of Gandhi shocked the world.

Just one year after his non-violent resistance campaign won independence for India, the 'Father of the Nation' was dead.

The Washington Post reported:

It is Gandhi the saint who will be remembered, not only on the plains and in the hills of India, but all over the world. He strove for perfection as other men strive for power and possessions. Now he belongs to the ages."

Gandhi's philosophy of non-violent protest has inspired millions of followers around the world.Gandhi's philosophy of non-violent protest has inspired millions of followers around the world.

Few people single-handedly change the course of history.

Gandhi was one of them.

His willpower moved mountains, and brought freedom to millions.

And his teachings inspire millions more around the world.

Albert Einstein wrote of Gandhi:
“Mahatma Gandhi's life achievement stands unique in political history... Generations to come will scarce believe that such a one as this walked the earth in flesh and blood.”

From the 'Father of India'.

Mahatma Gandhi typed and signed letter

So today, as the world remembers his life...

You have the opportunity to acquire something very special.

A rarity that will truly elevate your collection.

A genuine letter signed by Gandhi in 1927.

This typed letter has been beautifully preserved for almost 100 years.

It features a clear example of Gandhi's signature in exceptional condition.

And it includes Gandhi's own handwritten annotations in English.

The letter is written on a single sheet, measuring 7.5 x 8.75 inches.

The page is in very good to fine condition, with minor creases and mailing folds. And it comes with its original envelope, sent from India to London.

The typed letter is dated December 20, 1927.

It's addressed "As at the Ashram, Sabarmati", but was likely sent from the road as Gandhi was travelling at the time (a fact he mentions in the letter itself).

It was sent as a reply to one of Gandhi's loyal supporters at St Thomas' Hospital in London, and reads in part:

I remember your visit to the Ashram. I am travelling just now and I have no photograph such as you want. You may not know that during recent years I have never sat for a photograph, but of course there are many snapshots available in the bazaar.

Gandhi has also corrected the original text with 10 words in his own hand, written in English.

And his signature below is a very fine example.

Clear and distinct, signed neatly in crisp black ink.

It's an outstanding autograph that will stand proudly next to the greatest names in your collection.

A unique market, driven by demand.

Gandhi's memorabilia is unlike that of any other historic figure.

Many who follow his teachings view these pieces as sacred relics.

Others class them as items of national importance to be returned to India.

And wealthy investors in the U.S and Europe are fiercely competitive, because Gandhi's legacy makes him a major 'trophy' for every serious collection.

So these groups each have different but equally strong motivations to buy Gandhi memorabilia.

And that combination of high demand and scarcity drives the market.

These auction results tell the story:

  • In 2013 a typed and signed letter from 1943, written from his prison cell, sold for £115,000. More than seven times the top estimate.
  • In 2019 a signed photograph dating from 1947 sold for $37,500. Almost four times the original estimate.
  • In 2020 a brief handwritten note sold for £20,000. More than seven times the estimate.
  • And in December 2022 a 1931 typed & signed letter sold for $20,160. More than five times the initial estimate.

So it's clear to see...

When you own Gandhi's autograph, you own a rare piece of history that bidders will fight each other for.

A signature which other collectors will always want to own.

Which makes it an asset with major potential for the future.

Don't miss this rare opportunity.
