Watch experts reveal the world's "hardest to get" Rolex

The watch I’ve just sourced for you...

...Is the hardest to find Rolex in the world.

You can take my word for it. But you don’t have to.

Go on the online watch forums. Read what other dealers say on their websites. Best of all, walk into a Rolex authorised dealer, or a flagship Rolex store. Ask them: “Do you have this watch for sale?”

The answer will be a hard "no". And that is because:

The Sky-Dweller Blue Dial is the planet’s scarcest Rolex.

Your Sky-Dweller: Rolex's most complicated watch - which is why so few have been made

Why?

The blue dial Sky-Dweller has the most staggering supply-vs-demand ratio of any Rolex. Each authorised dealer receives less than 5 a year. Production is even shorter than the 116500LN Daytona.

Waiting lists are an average of 4 years. The Sky-Dweller is Rolex’s most complicated watch and takes more than a year to make. They just can’t meet demand.

Or should I say, “couldn’t meet demand”.

Because after just 7 years of limited production, Rolex discontinued the watch in 2023: No more being made. That move has made an “almost impossible to buy watch” into an “impossible to buy watch”.

Featuring dual-time for the world traveller and a clever red month indicator above the hour batons

This scarcity crunch means 2 main things:

  1. If you do own a blue dial Sky-Dweller, you’re in a fantastic position to make a long-term profit
  2. If you don’t own one, you should seriously consider getting one before prices potentially climb

And by the way, the notoriously short supply of all Rolexes has recently got even worse. Try to get your name down directly with Rolex for any new watch in their line right now. You can’t. They’ve closed the waiting lists.

So when I say this is the world’s scarcest Rolex, it’s a serious accolade.

The Rolex Sky-Dweller Blue Dial has increased in value by 17.8% since launch in 2017 to now, according to watch price tracker Chrono24.

Unique: with a satisfying click of the bezel you unlock a range of functions

Clearly, with tiny supply and high demand the Sky-Dweller has all the makings of a superb investment-watch.

But why is it so in demand? That's easy:

1. Looks: This is one handsome watch. The original all gold Sky-Dweller wasn’t universally loved when it launched in 2012. But once Rolex introduced the blue dial version in 2017, demand soared. The blue dial, silver case and white hands is a classically fine combination.

 Pre-worn, yet in immaculate condition

2. The Sky-Dweller is Rolex's first completely new watch since 1992: (That was the Yacht-Master)

3. The Sky-Dweller is Rolex’s most-complicated watch: Yet for a watch with many complications, it remains wonderfully uncomplicated

4. That’s because it features Rolex's patented bezel system: With a satisfying turn of the bezel you can activate and adjust different functions. For me this is the watch’s standout feature and is only found on the Sky-Dweller

5. Designed for the world traveller: The GMT function displays a second time zone on a 24-hour wheel

6. The rarely-seen annual calendar function automatically tells you the date and month (with a red indicator on the dial), with only February requiring manual assistance

Exciting investment potential

Remember: the Rolex Sky-Dweller Blue Dial has increased in value by 17.8% since launch in 2017 to now.

And with production finished, it's set to soar, in my opinion.

And there’s another reason why this watch is potentially a key investment piece.

And it’s simply this.

It’s a Rolex.

Established in London in 1905, Rolex has a reputation and pedigree like no other watchmaker. It’s a reputation well earned.

The company has the same drive for perfection today as when it began over 100 years ago:

  • Rolex crafts every watch from the finest precious metals and materials
  • It tells time incredibly accurately for a mechanical watch
  • The movements are all made by hand by skilled artisans - it takes a year to create even an "uncomplicated" Rolex

Rolex is synonymous with quality. Craftsmanship. The best. There’s a reason Edmund Hillary wore a Rolex when he conquered Everest in 1953.

Which is why, if you’re investing in watches - Rolex is the only place to start

Rolex Sky Dweller Blue

Your opportunity to own the hardest to get Rolex

No other luxury watch can match its brand recognition.

The demand for high-end watches, and Rolexes in particular, has soared in recent years.

Yet Rolex continues to produce its models in limited numbers.

As we've seen, waiting lists (if you're allowed on one) for new examples now stretch out for years. So collectors are turning to the secondary market - pushing prices ever higher.

It's predicted that by 2025 the global market for pre-owned watches will be worth $30 billion.

Prices for Rolex watches have increased by an average 202% since 2012.

Yet here’s the incredible thing.

This is a market still very much in its infancy.

Sky-Dweller review from Esquire magazine:

Much of the Sky-Dweller's charm lies in the deceptively simple readout for its complications. It's both a GMT and an annual calendar. But while many watches with such features load up on visual bells and whistles, the Sky-Dweller hides the complexity tastefully under the hood.

The GMT function displays a second time zone on an asymmetrically placed 24-hour wheel, read off against a fixed marker on the dial. The calendar will automatically tell you the date and month without fail. But the most conversation-worthy thing here is the patented bezel system, which allows you to adjust several functions in seconds with the single crown.

Prior to the 1980s, nobody collected wristwatches. Open a Sotheby’s watch catalogue up until the 1990s and it was all pocket watches and carriage clocks. Wristwatches were an afterthought.

Which means values have much catching up to do compared with more established sectors such as classic cars or art.

That’s huge scope for growth.

The experts at Deloitte agree. An October 2022 report predicts the luxury second-hand watch market will grow by 75% between now and 2030. Fuelled by Millennial and Gen Z consumers.

We've just sourced this extraordinary timepiece.

This is the watch that authorised Rolex dealers say is harder to get hold of than any other.
