Daniel Day-Lewis' charity auction, which was held in aid of the Wicklow Hospice Foundation, has raised $332,467 at the European premiere of Lincoln, which was held in Dublin on January 20.

In doing so, the auction pushed the foundation close to its target of €3m ($3.9m), which it requires to build a new hospice just outside of the Irish capital. Day-Lewis has long been a patron of the foundation and lives in County Wicklow himself.
The sale came about after the actor asked director Steven Spielberg to donate some props from the film as a favour - memorabilia of this quality rarely comes to the market so soon after the film has been released.
Few would want to compete with the buying power of Steven Spielberg at auction, yet he was outbid by his own wife, actress Kate Capshaw, who paid €43,000 ($57,228) for a set of etchings by U2 frontman, Bono.

Bono's wife Ali Hewson then bid on a pair of boxing gloves from Olympic gold medallist Katie Taylor, while U2 guitarist The Edge reportedly bought the two signed scripts from the film, though his final bid has not been revealed.
Other items included a handmade knife used by Abraham Lincoln during the film, his white gloves, as well as signed photographs and posters. Prior to the sale, the foundation stated that it hoped to make any unsold items available online.
