A 1963 Martin D-28 acoustic guitar Bob Dylan played onstage throughout the late 60s and mid 70s has realised $396,500 at Heritage Auctions.
Dylan is known to have played it at George Harrison’s Concert for Bangladesh in 1971. It was also one of Dylan's main touring guitars from 1975-1976 – the era of his Rolling Thunder Revue.
Dylan decided to switch to playing Gibson acoustic guitars in the late 70s
He sold the lot to his guitar tech, Larry Cragg, in 1977 after deciding to switch from Martin to Gibson.
Heritage Auctions stated prior to the sale: “According to Cragg, he has kept the guitar in a humidity-controlled environment, with loosened strings for the forty years it's been in his possession, and it has not been played since it was wielded by Bob Dylan in 1977.
“This is a veritable treasure for the Dylan faithful, and a piece of music history.”
Guitars from Dylan’s heritage years are in enormous demand.
The Fender Stratocaster he played onstage in his first electric set at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival sold for a massive $965,000 at Christie’s in 2013.
As one of the most celebrated figures in the music industry, it’s very likely his memorabilia will only increase in value over time.
