Five dresses once worn by Princess Diana have sold at Julien's Auctions' Icons & Idols 2014 sale, led by a Caroline Charles number.

Diana sold many of her dresses just a month before her death in 1997

The dresses crossed the block in Beverly Hills on December 5, attracting top bids. The Caroline Charles dress saw bids of $125,000, far surpassing its $40,000 high estimate by 212.5%.

The collection was originally sold by Diana herself in 1997 to raise funds for charity. The dresses have appeared in numerous auctions since, and have become highly desirable pieces of memorabilia.

The burgundy wool coat dress was worn in 1982 when Diana visited the Milan Asian Community Playgroup in Wandsworth, London, and was also seen at Aberdeen Airport while the Princess was carrying Prince William.

It was previously on display at Kensington Palace and was part of the touring exhibition Diana, Princess of Wales: Dress for a Cause.

The second highest selling dress was a Zandra Rhodes-designed evening gown, which made $100,000. An ivory silk chiffon dress, Diana wore it to the Birthright benefit at the London Palladium in May 1987.

Princess Diana's chartreuse silk gown by Catherine Walker, her long time friend and designer, made $81,250, while a petal pink Walker gown achieved $75,000.

Paul Fraser Collectibles has a great selection of Princess Diana memorabilia for sale.
