Gene Kranz's Apollo 11 flight book makes $75,000 at RR Auction

NASA flight director Gene Kranz's Apollo 11 flight book sold for $75,028 at RR Auction on November 20.

Kranz described the lot as "a primary resource for coordinating that mission and associated activities both during the flight or while Armstrong and Aldrin were on the lunar surface."

Kranz was the flight director on the Apollo 11 mission

It contains detailed breakdowns of flight procedures, shift schedules, charts and memos. Another notebook accompanying it includes various manuals, including the abort and rescue plan.

In a letter of provenance Kranz said: "Contained within is a compilation of information for my personal use as Flight Director.

"The material included reflected what I determined most useful in order to efficiently and successfully manage those aspects of Apollo 11 that I was responsible for.

"Each 'Flight Director's Goody Book' included material mirroring individual needs, as we each had our own diverse backgrounds and knowledge base…."

A two-ton boilerplate capsule used in training for the Mercury project (responsible for the first manned US space flight) between 1959 and 1963 realised $51,909. It was discovered in a barn in the late 2000s and has since been repainted and restored.

We have a copy of Life Magazine signed by all three members of the Apollo 11 expedition.
