The Deflategate scandal swept the NFL in January

The scandal swept the NFL in January this year, after it was alleged that the New England Patriots were using underinflated balls in some of their home games.

This would make the balls easier to grip, thus ostensibly giving the Patriots an edge.

However, it was concluded earlier this month by the American Enterprise Institute earlier this month that it was "unlikely that the Patriots deflated the footballs."

This could well affect the sum that collectors are willing to pay for the ball at auction.

The auction house describes it as "The ball that will live in infamy.

"The historical importance of this piece cannot be understated. It is the most 'topical' piece of sports memorabilia that we can recall ever being sold so close to the event itself."

The lot was handed to the consigner by Patriots wide receiver Brandon LaFell after LeGarrette Blount's 3rd quarter touchdown.
