'Jumbo' Honus Wagner baseball card coming to auction

A "jumbo"-sized example of the famed T206 Honus Wagner baseball card auctions in September, reports 24/7 Wall St.

The card, whose borders are 1/16 of an inch larger than standard, last sold in 2013 for $2.1m - a record for an undoctored baseball card, and up from the $1.6m it made in 2008.

The card is graded PSA EX 5, which places it second only to the controversial Gretzky card, which is graded NM-MT 8 and sold for $2.8m in 2008.

Yet the Gretzky card, so called because "The Great One" once owned it, was at the centre of a criminal investigation. We now know that Mastro Auctions' founder, Bill Mastro, trimmed the card to improve its appearance, and its value.

The American Tobacco Company released just 200 Honus Wagner cards as part of its 1909 series - their scarcity a result of Wagner's threat of legal action over the unlicensed use of his image. Only 43 have emerged for grading.

Goldin Auctions is the company behind the sale. It is also auctioning a 1979 Wayne Gretzky O-Pee-Chee rookie card in an August 13-ending sale. Bids stand at $280,000, testament to the fact this is the finest-graded example of the card in existence.

PSA has given it a GEM MT 10 grading - you can't get better. It's expected to make in excess of $400,000.

The August sale also features the gloves the late Muhammad Ali wore in his 1971 Fight of the Century against Joe Frazier. They have a present bid of $270,000 but an estimate of $1m.
