Ted Williams achieved a batting average of .328 in the 1958 season

Williams (1918-2002) is considered one of the greatest hitters in baseball history.

His swing was so powerful, that it actually ended up changing how the game was played.

The manager of the St Louis Eagles realised in 1946 that he could put a stop to Williams' endless succession of runs by moving his fielders on to one side of the field - a move known as the Infield Shift.

This meant Williams had to hit to the other side, weakening his drive. The technique proved so effective that it is still used on power hitters today.

Williams was 40 years old during the 1958 season, making him an elder statesman in the world of baseball.

Remarkably, he still led the league with a batting average of .328.

The lot is accompanied by a pair of leggings worn by Red Sox manager Pinky Higgins and a pair of stirrups.

Williams' status ensures a strong market for his memorabilia.

In 2014, one of only two complete Williams Red Sox unforms made $137,000 at Lelands.

The sale will also feature the chess board used in the nail-biting 1972 World Chess Championship.
