'One of the most sought-after Rolexes around': the 'Paul Newman' Cosmograph

As we've reported, Heritage will be holding one of its Signature Fine Timepieces Auction this week, with 323 collectible watches slipping under the hammer. The poster-piece for the sale is an extremely rare Patek Philippe Ref 5250, expected to sell for up to $140,000.

Jostling for the top spot, however, is a watch unlike it in almost all respects:  the Rolex ultra rare Ref 6263 Gold "Paul Newman" Oyster Cosmograph.

Whilst the 5250 is elegant and understated with a white gold case, black strap and Arabic numerals, the 6263 is a brash 18k yellow gold in case and dial with sharply contrasting black subdials and rim. Made in 1976, the piece is one of the most coveted of all Rolex watches.

"The eye appeal alone is enough to make this one of the most sought-after Rolex's around," commented Jim Wolf, Director of Fine Timepieces at Heritage.

"Its association with Paul Newman, one of Hollywood's all-time great leading men, for whom the first one was designed and presented to, makes it even more attractive. Add to that the simply impeccable craftsmanship and you have a simply stellar piece."

Heritage's auction takes place on December 4 in New York and online. Other investment-grade timepieces by Cartier, Audemars Piguet, Piaget, Tiffany and Corum as well as Rolex and Patek Philippe also appear in the sale.

Collectors and investors drawn to fine timepieces may also be interested to know that a truly unique example, Grieb & Benzinger's Russian Imperator is currently available away from the sale.
