Chateau Palmer 'best of the appellation' 1961 wine auctions in Hong Kong

Acker Auctions is among the online wine traders embracing the growing Hong Kong markets, with a number of the lots in its current sale (closing August 8) being sold from a location in the region.

Among them is the legendary 1961 Chateau Palmer, a Third Growth in name alone which was once awarded 99/100 points by the eminent wine critic, Robert Parker.

Thought by many experts to contend with the Chateau Margaux for "best of the appellation" status, this sweet and full medium red is known for its intensely perfumed aroma, mellow balance, higher-than-average Merlot content (up to 40%) and great long-term ageing potential.

And this reputation certainly doesn't come without a price. Five half-bottles of the 1961, boasting "excellent colour" according to Acker, will appear in the sale with an estimate of $3,000-4,800. Minimum online bids for the lot currently stand at $2,400.

According to expert reviewer Steve Tanker (who gave the wine a 98/100 rating) the sweet, rose petal and Merlot textures of the 1961 Chateau Palmer should be in full-bloom from now until 2015, offering collectors and investors an opportunity to purchase this legendary wine in its prime.
