DRC La Tache magnums top Sotheby's wine auction

Six magnums of 1971 Domaine de la Romanee-Conti (DRC) La Tache have auctioned for $91,875.

The spectacular lot beat its $85,000 high estimate to lead Sotheby’s Finest and Rarest Wines sale in New York on February 25.

DRC La Tache

La Tache is famed for its scarcity and exquisite taste

That's evidence of the continuing strong demand for the famed Burgundy producer, which crafts just a small number of bottles each year. Less than 20,000 bottles of La Tache emerge each season.

Bottles from 1971 are particularly revered, adding to the value of this lot.

Two magnums of "victory vintage" 1945 Chateau La Mission Haut-Brion almost doubled their estimate to sell for $42,875.

Twenty-one magnums of differing vintages from California’s Harlan Estate sold within estimate for $23,275.
