19th century Oushak carpet to auction for $40,000?

A late 19th century Oushak carpet is to auction at Bonhams' Fine Oriental Rugs and Carpets sale in Los Angeles on July 29.

The Turkish carpet, called by convention after the rug-producing city of Usak - one of the larger Anatolian metropolises - is estimated to be worth $40,000.

Will this Oushak carpet exceed its $40,000 top estimate?

Also to star is a dazzling late 19th century Sultanabad carpet hailing from central Persia and valued at $12,000, and a circa 1900 meshed Emoghli carpet, which is expected to make $20,000.

Persian rug auction
Stunning: a late 19th century Sultanabad carpet is expected to bring $12,000

In June 2013, a "sickle leaf" Persian rug sold for $33.7m at Sotheby's - a new world record price for a Persian rug at auction. The value of the rug represented a 238.7% increase on the previous $9.6m world record price, which was achieved by a 17th century Kirman "vase rug" in 2010.

Following the record-breaking sale, international rug expert Jan David Winitz insisted "best of the best" carpets are now considered among art objects.

"The auction comes at a time when art collectors are increasingly interested in the best of the best historical Oriental rugs, which are almost entirely in museums and rarely come to market," he said.
