Chinese 'Fu' character armchairs expected to make $700,000

A pair of Huanghuali and Huama wood "Fu" character armchairs is expected to make $500,000-700,000 in Sotheby's sale of the Fabian Collection of Chinese furniture.

They were produced during the late Ming dynasty, in the 16th or 17th century, and are part of a set of 11 in this form.

Cynthia Volk, Sotheby's senior Chinese art specialist, comments: "The elegant beauty of Chinese hardwood furniture is on glorious display in the Fabian Collection.

"Commissioned from the 16th century by the scholarly elite, wealthy aristocrats, courtiers, and emperors, the desirability of these fine pieces has never faltered and we are now witnessing a tremendous appetite for these enduring works from collectors around the world."

The auction will take place in New York on March 15.
