Emanuel Suter stoneware pot breaks auction record at $86,000

A stoneware sugar pot made by Emanuel Suter (1833-1902) has broken the world record for Virginia pottery after selling at Jeffrey S Evans & Associates' auction on June 22.

The pot is believed to have been created by Suter during his apprenticeship

The pot is considered important due to its stencilled mark of "Emanuel Suter" across the front, which is only known on this and two other examples. It sold for $86,250, beating the previous record of $82,250 by 4.8%.

Suter is considered the most prominent Mennonite potter of the American south during the second half of the 19th century.
