Fine Chinese censer achieves 4,066% increase on valuation

A fine Chinese censer made a 4,066% increase on its £3,000-5,000 ($4,855-8,092) estimate when it sold for £125,000 ($202,312) at Charterhouse Auctioneers earlier today.

The censer features a pierced cover decorated with a mille fleure design, and stands on three bulbous feet.

This is not the first time that a Chinese artefact has been dramatically undervalued - and it won't be the last.

A sale at Elite Decorative Arts in Florida earlier this year saw a white-jade chariot sculpture make $40,000 against an estimate of $300-500 - an increase of 7,923%.

Additionally, a carved, two sided jade panel surprised auctioneers last month - achieving a 54,900% increase when it sold for $330,000 against a $400-600 valuation.
