An exceptional late renaissance-period marble tabletop has sold for £962,500 ($1.5m) at Sotheby's London.

The antique marble, coral and mother of pearl-inlaid table top, which was drawn from one of Britain's most substantial stately homes, crossed the auction block on July 3, as part of Sotheby's Treasures, Princely Taste sale.
Duly, it boasts a suitably starry history: a striking pattern comprising four acorns indicates that the Della-Rovere family (who ruled the Dukedom of Urbino, a walled city situated in Italy's Marche region) commissioned the table during the last quarter of the 16th century.
Brought to England by Reverend Sanford in 1840, the striking table sold securely within its £800,000-1.2m estimate.
