Martin Brothers Disraeli caricature sets new auction record

An RW Martin & Brothers' caricature of British prime minister Benjamin Disraeli has sold for £233,000 ($347,340), a new record for the maker.

The auction took place at Phillips in London on December 16.

Martin Brothers Phillips
RW Martin & Brothers opened in the 1870s and ceased production in 1923

The brothers began creating their much loved, but undeniably grotesque ceramic bird sculptures during the late 19th century onwards.

Alexander Payne, Phillips' head of design, comments: "We had very active bidding for a number of lots, and we are pleased to set a new record for a Martin Brothers' bird caricature of Benjamin Disraeli.

"The market for extraordinary design pieces remains solid".
