Russian royal family bottle auctions 1,140% over estimate

A spirit bottle adorned with the crest of the Russian royal family made £6,200 ($10,122) at Sworders in Essex, UK on September 10.

In doing so it smashed its estimate of £500 ($816) by 1,140%.

The auction house commented: "A late 17th century Dutch or Bohemian Spirit bottle with links to the Russian royal family saw intense internet bidding.

"A Russian bidder eventually won with a bid of £6,200, no doubt attracted to the wheel engraved arms of the Romanovs.

"The cipher is thought to have been on the Russian Imperial Arms and is that is Empress Elizabeth Petrovna (1709-1761) the daughter of Peter the Great, who toured Europe in late 17th century - and the glass was probably that of the Imperial Glass Manufactory."
