San Francisco Antiques Show sets art deco theme for 2013

The San Francisco Fall Antiques Show has announced its theme for 2013 - Jazz Moderne: Art Deco and the Avant Garde.

San Francisco Fall Antiques Show 2013
Art deco 'embraced a new ideal, looked to the future and influenced everything from furniture and architecture to fashion, jewelry, decorative arts and even advertising'

The show will run from October 24-27, with the theme set to coincide with this year being the 80th anniversary of the end of prohibition, and subsequently the design movement for which the era has become known.

However, the event will not be solely dedicated to art deco items, as it presents 60 vetted international specialists in a range of high-end art and antiques.

"Art Deco was the epitomy of the avant garde, pushing the envelope of what was considered beautiful and embracing the machine age," commented Arian Trimuschat, director of the show.

"It was an aesthetic that was light years away from what preceded it. It embraced a new ideal, looked to the future and influenced everything from furniture and architecture to fashion, jewellery, decorative arts and even advertising."

As guests enter the event, they will be welcomed by an installation from San Francisco-based architect Andrew Skurman and painter Willem Racke, which explores the jazz age and the influence it has today.

A preview gala will take place on October 23, with 100% of the proceeds donated to Enterprise for High School. Greeting guests will be jazz singer and Bay Area native Kitty Margolis.
