$242.5k fine porcelain candelabra sells at Christie's

Christie's have completed their sale of Benjamin F Edwards' collection of porcelain whose collection and life we described in a recent newsletter. Edwards had a particular eye for high quality, beautiful imported porcelain, and brought it over from China, Japan, England and the Netherlands in particular.

The sale interested bidders from around the world, with some of the best pieces being bought by traders and collectors in the UK and Europe as well as the US.

A rare huge Monteith basin, intended for chilling bottles of wine doubled its estimate $40,000-60,000 to fetch $122,500.

But the top lot was a pair of 1725 Verte-Imari Candelabra. Whilst expected to be one of the biggest sellers with an estimate of $80,000-120,000 it excited the audience and bidders pushed the price up to $242,500.

Becky MacGuire, Senior Specialist, commented "Established and new collectors responded tremendously at all price levels, which reflected a genuine depth and confidence to the market.

"It was extremely gratifying to witness clients bidding with such enthusiasm to each of the five classic decorative arts categories in the Edwards's sale."
