$41,125 Yavapai Apache pot leads American Indian sale

Cowan's American Indian and Western Auction took place on March 26, netting a total of $792,000 in sales.

Of the 507 exceptional lots, the highest seller was a circa 1900 Yavapai Apache olla with figural decorations. It sold for $41,125.

The pot's surface bears 53 coiled figures, including dogs, deer and humans plus intricate banded motifs of triangles. It measures 20.5 inches, with an 18.5 inches diameter.

Other highlights in the sale included a hide tobacco bag form the fourth quarter of the 19th century. The bag's condition outstanding colouration saw it nearly double its $8,000-10,000 estimate, selling for $17,919.

Elsewhere, buckskin Flathead cradleboard perhaps once used to carry an American Indian baby sold at Samuel T Freeman's auction, yesterday (April 19). Watch this space for more news on the auction.
